I don't normally do this when some one has a plan in mind, but I think a pine frame and panel section would look great over that area.

If I run the grooves at the glue joints, will that weaken them too much.....I would think that there really will not be any tension to deal with.....I plan to attach by small screws from inside the cabinet.....all opinions will be greatly appreciated.....

Ok, pine verticals will work. Careful when you cut your tongue and groove. Use feather boards so they come out nice and straight and even. When You apply them to the plywood, I like the idea of screws from the back side but I'm not partial to glue. First, are you using oil (alkyd) paint? Second, leave a slight gap 1/32-1/16 (no more) to allow for expansion and contraction of the wood. A kitchen is a terrible place for heat and humidity. Next, I would drop a bit of glue in the middle of the width of the board at each end but none in the grooves. Allow them to move when they breathe.

 

Thanks for the tips, Ron......I will be covering the pine with a satin polyurathane.....that will match the cabinets that I will install.....eventually, I will replace all the cabinets in the kitchen, and they too will be pine with poly. I assume, on this pine facing, I should cover the face side and the back???......

 

I don't know about the poly. The last kitchen I did was with a special "kitchen" latex and that was disastrous. My wife's choice, not mine. She was talked into it by the paint "specialist" at the store. By the time I was done with them, they stopped carrying the paint. My worry about the poly is that it is too porous for a kitchen. Check with the experts will you? Make sure you do all sides and ends of the boards before you install them. Also, I'm assuming that you're going to screw through the plywood that you've got there already?
