Making American Style Flutes and Canes: Router Jig Ideas for Woodworking

Hi--
Don here, from Boston Bar BC.
I make several types of musical instruments, but mostly American Style Flutes. I make considerable use of the router with the flute making and make my own jigs. I have been away from woodworking for a couple of years due to health reasons, but having recovered, am getting the old itch again. For new projects I am looking at making canes or walking sticks from laminated flat stock and looking for ideas to safely round off the shaft with the router, particularly in the crook area. Also working on a jig to round off my flute barrels, as one section has to have a raised flat section.
This sounds like a good group for exchanging ideas.

Hi Don:

O Boy does this sound interesting. Hmmmmmmmm, jigs fellas!

Ok, have you ever heard of something called A Router Lathe? Craftsman made one. Trend also made one. Do some digging around the 'net and with a bit of imagination you should be able to tell if it meets your requirements. If so, you're into the ebay world to find one.

You're going to have to do it in two pieces though. The crook could be done with a pattern on a table with a bearing bit and use a 1/4 roundover bit to give you the gross shape and form. The rest will be done by hand though. The shaft is going to be more problematic though. You'll want some sort of lathe function there. If you're using laminated stock, you can make some really interesting designs with the RouterLathe.

I'm sure you're going to get lots of different ideas.
