Wow, beautiful work! I think if I was going to try something like that I'd either use a small rotary tool like a Dremel or my reciprocating carving tool. I think a router would be too awkward for me to handle doing that kind of carving.

 

Your question Don would suggest that the magnificent bowl shown is not your own work. A certain amount of routing is certainly possible on the outside of a bowl, but a drawing of what you have in mind would be necessary for an in depth answer.
